Some magnesium salts and a mixture of magnesium and calcium salts accelerate skin barrier recovery

Abstract The effects of four different magnesium salts on the cutaneous barrier recovery rate after barrier disruption were evaluated. We spread an aqueous so- lution of each salt on the flank skin of hairless mice, occluded the area with a plastic membrane for 20 min, and then left the skin surface to dry.

The effect of vehicle on skin absorption of Mg2+ and Ca2+ from thermal spring water

Thermal spring waters (TSW) are commonly used as active ingredients in cosmetics. Their biological activities directly depend on the ionic composition of the spring. However, in order to exhibit beneficial properties, the minerals need to reach viable skin layers.

Skin Barrier and Calcium

Epidermal barrier formation and the maintenance of barrier homeostasis are essential to protect us from the external envi- ronments and organisms. Moreover, impaired keratinocytes differentiation and dysfunctional skin barrier can be the pri- mary causes or aggravating factors for many inflammatory skin diseases including atopic dermatitis and psoriasis.

Calcium - a central regulator of keratinocyte differentiation in health and disease

Regular keratinocyte differentiation is crucial for the formation of an intact epidermal barrier and is triggered by extracellular calcium. Disturbances of epidermal barrier formation and aberrant keratinocyte differentiation are involved in the pathophysiology of several skin diseases, such as psoriasis, atopic dermatitis, basal and squamous skin cancer, and genetic skin diseases such as Darier’s disease and Olmstedt syndrome.
